Artist Statement

"The immediacy and control of pastel seduced me. I began painting with pastel in January of 1999. Prior to that, I had been a mere dilettante - at most I had been incubating - waiting for expression. With pastel, color choices are as varied as the hues and colors of jewels; mixing is spontaneous and there are no dishes or brushes to wash.

My subject sites are nooks and crannies in and around Battle Creek. Location visits, photographs, memory, light and mood serve as my source. I am particularly fond of landscapes. The landscape transports us, takes us to another place where time can lengthen. Landscape induces tranquility, at times soothing, at times stimulating and exciting - it assists in our escape, however brief. It serves for me as a celebration of the beauty of the mundane and as a way to preserve that beauty."
